Accompanying this map, the US intelligence agency stated that «in 2020, the United States recognized Western Sahara as part of Morocco».
This recognition was a decision upheld by President Joe Biden throughout his term, despite significant pressure from the Democratic Party’s left wing and some Republican lawmakers with ties to Algeria. With Trump’s return to power, Morocco is hopeful that the American billionaire will direct his chief diplomat to establish a US consulate in Dakhla, as he announced on December 10, 2020, when he declared US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
In recent developments, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State has lauded Morocco for its advancements, particularly following its commitment to the Abraham Accords. However, Marco Rubio expressed disappointment that the economic relations with Rabat have not yet reached the depth of the political and historical connections between the two nations.
