Baltic Sea sabotage: Finnish investigators discover underwater mark

Posted on

Finnish authorities have found a lengthy underwater path, approximately 62 miles long, surrounding the area where a submarine communications cable was damaged on Christmas Day.

The ship allegedly responsible for this act of tampering is the Eagle S, a vessel registered under the Cook Islands’ flag. It is reportedly associated with a clandestine Russian fleet that smuggles Russian oil across the globe in a manner that evades international sanctions.

The power link between Finland and Estonia is expected to be out of commission for several months, likely resulting in higher electricity costs in Estonia.

“We’ve now established that the drag mark in question is the anchor of the Eagle S. Our researchers have obtained this clarification through underwater studies,” Police Chief Investigator Sami Paila explained to the Yle national broadcaster on Sunday.

Estonian authorities have conceded that finding the perpetrator will be a challenging task, despite initial suspicions being swiftly directed toward Russia.
