Hollywood’s award season began with the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist” won major awards. Unforeseen wins went to actresses Fernanda Torres and Demi Moore.
Just five days into the new year, Hollywood’s awards season got underway on Sunday evening with the 82nd Golden Globes. Along with the expected winners, especially in the TV categories, there were a couple of surprises.
“Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language musical about a transgender Mexican cartel leader, won for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. The award for best motion picture – drama went to “The Brutalist,” a three-and-a-half-hour epic about an architect from Hungary who achieves success in the United States.
‘The newest and most popular films consistently handle sensitive and contentious themes.
Both films were among the most heavily nominated heading into the awards ceremony. “Emilia Pérez” was nominated in ten categories, and won four in total, including the main category. It also took home awards for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture, Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actress, which went to Zoe Saldana.
The Brutalist film received seven nominations and secured three awards, including the best drama award. Lead actor Adrien Brody was acclaimed as best actor, and the film’s director, Brady Corbet, won the award for best director.
The winners’ speeches and the jokes delivered by presenters and host, comedian Nikki Glaser (the first solo female host), were predominantly non-political. Notably, films addressing the lives of trans individuals and immigration issues won top honors, topics that have been frequently used by populist politicians in various countries to fuel support.
What are the indications for the Oscars race?
The Golden Globes, voted on by journalists from non-US media outlets, are often viewed as a predictor of the Academy Awards, which honor films. Nomination voting for the Oscars begins on Wednesday, and it’s likely that voters will be influenced by their reception of the Golden Globes on Sunday.
Certain film actors who are contenders for this year’s Academy Awards, demonstrated cleverness by using the Golden Globes ceremony as a platform for campaigning. Demi Moore, who received her first-ever Golden Globe for her portrayal in “The Substance,” a film that tells the story of an aging actress who resorts to extreme measures to revive her career, made a point in her acceptance speech about her longevity in the industry and the despair she overcame.
Unexpected wins and shutouts
A surprise victory went to Fernanda Torres, who won the award for best drama actress for her role in the movie “I’m Still Here,” a drama based on a true story that takes place in Brazil during the country’s military dictatorship. The film has been a massive success in Brazil, and has also sparked a boycott by the far-right in the country.
The film has been nominated for four awards, but it has won only for cinematic and box office achievement.
It continued its awards success, winning in the category for the best limited series, with cast members Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Tadanobu Asano receiving acting awards as well.
Nominated in five categories, but won only for its star, Jeremy Allen White, as Best Actor.
