Russia warns Europe will ‘pay the price’ after termination of gas transit agreement

Russia has warned that Ukraine’s decision not to prolong the agreement allowing the passage of Russian gas to Europe will risk threatening European economies.

In December, Ukraine’s capital city announced the expiration of the agreement reached with Russia before the war, set for January 1, a development predicted to pose challenges for Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria, which have hitherto relied heavily on Russian gas supplies.

Resident of the Moldovan region of Transnistria have already experienced gas shortages, as reported by the BBC.

“The depletion of alternative and eco-friendly Russian energy sources not only diminishes Europe’s economic capacity and opportunities, but also severely affects the overall well-being of European citizens,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated earlier.

Despite the ongoing conflict that started in February 2022, Russian gas continued to flow through Ukraine in accordance with the 2019 agreement terms.

At a summit held in Brussels last December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he did not intend to prolong the agreement.
